Just watched "The Flying Scotsman" dvd last night and found this - excellent companion to the film which is definitely worth a look.

As a Scot myself, it's slightly puzzling how little of this I knew about.

Indicative of the sports low standing in general I guess which is a real pity. If he was French or Italian he would probably be a millionaire.

he didn't lose his place on the pro team. he refused to pay for his medical expenses and walked away from job security and his dream because of his principles. Can you or I say we would do the same thing?

...there's a parallel between Ovett (Obree, free spirit) and Boardman (Coe, science) where some mistook Coes perceived arrogance as a lack of respect, but in both cases I see this as just another part of what makes champions and the sportmanship is clear to see...it's unfair to simplify this into Obree=good Boardman=bad. Now to find a similar documentary on the great Robert Miller!

Couple of comments - fabulous documentary. The film was dire, the only redeeming feature being that it was true, the worst part of it being that the real characters were far more interesting and charasmatic than the actors could potray. I think Chris Boardman is getting a rough deal from the comments here. I see him as a single minded, dedicated, determined but ultimately completely fair guy ...

In the film it says Obree only took 5 weeks prep for the world champs and hadn't done pursuit before.

Just watched the film tonight and then spent an hour reading up on this incredible man and watched this doc. With what he achieved its a puzzle to some why he would think to take his life but depression is a very difficult condition, I suffer from it too. Wishhim all the best and just to say if there was a limited edition Obree road bike it would sell out.

Great film. Thanks for posting. Obree is a legend on par with Boardman. With his powers of recovery he should of won the tour de France.
