Two spotted hyena brothers have debuted at the San Diego Zoo and have quickly acclimated to their habitat, near the top of Sun Bear Forest.
The 9-year siblings, named Zephyr and Turbo are members of the largest of the three species of hyena. The San Diego Zoo also houses striped hyenas, but not the brown hyena.
"They have been really interested in everything that goes on around them," says Hali Anderson, San Diego Zoo keeper, and chief caretaker of the hyenas. "They play in the water and even hide the bones we give them in the pool. They acclimated really quickly and seem to be enjoying all the experiences, especially people watching."
Hyenas are often thought to be a type of canine because of their resemblance to wild dog species. They are actually not a dog or a cat, but are so unique they constitute their own family. Spotted hyenas have also been referred to as the laughing hyena, due to its unique vocalization, which sounds similar to human laughter.
The spotted hyena is a predator native to many areas in Africa and live in large groups, called clans, which are led by a female and can reach over 70 individuals. They are carnivores with large heads, strong jaws and huge teeth used to crush bone. Their jaws can produce pressure up to 800 pounds per square inch.

  • @LoneWolfHowl1 Isn't that amazing? According to wikipedia, both spotted and striped hyenas have been reported to have killed dogs in one bite to the neck without piercing the skin! That means that they just broke the neck! I like dogs, but hyenas are really interesting!

  • Did you know that their jaws are stronger than the lions?

  • @xxwhatevahxx yeah, i heard today female's are also the leaders.

if males dont listen to them they tear there ears of 0_0

but seriously i wonder how many human woman haters react if they learn of this?

  • If you ask me, hyenas are more humanitarian than humans. Unlike lions, they don't kill hyena cubs even if they are not their own. They even have females for leaders. Can't say you find same things in the human world too often...

  • hyenas are the best i have a female she is a year and a half old

  • For some reason a baby hyena came up to me and just looked at me today atthe zoo. I held my hand out both licked the glass trying to lick it for some reasontoday ar the zoo. Also at the zoo a male ram baaas out to me at the zoo too. What does it all mean I wonder.

  • They are pretty danged cute, but those jaws are bone-crushers.

  • The male Hyenas are the "females" of the Hyenas if you know what i mean? The Males are much smaller, weaker and less agressive than Female Hyenas.

  • i like hyena's byt the problem is that if you make them mad enoguh, they chase you but there most likely cute to see but some pictures look like evil dogs. But I like them alot =]
