you might want to review some Ray Mears videos re: splitting with a small axe. To recap the 'Ray Mears' method, if your axe can't hit something else other then YOU, if you miss, you're standing too tall, Get on your knees. Might say you're not swinging the axe, but in a 'conservation of energy' its more efficient to NOT be standing/bending over your work. By standing you decrease your reach to the 'block' increasing a possible 'miss' even with this method, you CAN miss the 'block'.
