i dont know why people like pavarotti so much, this tenor is by far better than him

Gedda owns this aria! He sings all stylistic periods masterfully and any literature from Lyric to Dramatic with equal ease.

You compared Gedda and Pav, both artists, and then said there is no need to compare artists & that it's impossible. I disagree, and believe you are saying that to appear wise & to be liked by everyone, not because of any grounding in reality. I am also saying that the belief that artists cannot be compared is the opinion of one who doesn't listen with a critical (or even an attentive) ear. When two things are different, they can be compared, because they aren't the same.

You say that Gedda is a better singer than Pavarotti, then you say that it's impossible to compare artists.
Gedda and Pavarotti both got where they were by looking up to better artists for guidance and inspiration, and by the hard work of their own self-criticism and close scrutiny of their teachers, which I know from reading their autobiographies. Comparisons are necessary for great artists to exist, they are great for their ability and desire to be more than mediocre.

@jcmcpr Yes, sometimes Gedda is better singer, but Pavarotti is much more than a performer, and everyone realize this. Let's don't compare artists, no need, and is impossible.
Gedda is superb, thanks for posting this!

Well, I think Nicolai was a little bit past his "sell by " date when he did this.
He is obviously relying on his great technique to get the piece across. Iv'e heard him
sing with far more panache and confidence than this. Think back to the 50s and 60s
That's when you heard the man at the top.

No, Gedda does NOT "own" this aria! While he does his expected great job, this aria, to be really effective & heart-wrenching, must be sung by an Italian - Lanza, Gigli, Pavarotti, DiStefano.
Sorry, I forgott to mention the year: It was 1977.
