Under left side plastic cover there is metal regulator that hits bike framw while vibrates. Put your hand on it and check if that sound goes away !

It sounds to me like it's the heat shield vibrating against something. The clutch is very secure and it's be hard for it to make a ping sound. Let it cool for a while and take a towel or something to press up against the heat shields on the pipes, start er up and see if it stops. I'm not an expert but i'm VERY familiar with the VLX. It's an amazingly simple bike so there isn't a whole lot to go wrong with it.
