http://diet4yourmind.com Linda Gabriel tests different sizes and shapes of glasses to see which ones give the illusion of a larger serving - based on research from the book Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink which contains some great weight loss tips for how to fool your mind, or your "mind's eye" into thinking you're eating more (or less) than you really are.
Dr. Wansink asked bartenders to estimate the amount of alcohol they poured into different shape glasses. When they poured into a short wide glass versus a tall narrow glass, they always underestimated the amount. In other words they were unconsciously more likely to serve you more volume in a smaller wide glass - but the eye sees it as less.
So I decided to try this with my own glasses. I poured an equal amount of cranberry juice into several different size and shape glasses.
Conclusion: If you serve drinks in tall narrow glasses, you'll be drinking less even though your eye and therefore your mind (and stomach) will believe you're drinking more than if you used a wide glass. It matters what kind of glass you choose.
And just in case you're wondering if the amounts are all the same, be sure to watch the end of the video!
