- Pilot whales form matrilineal families that stay together for generations. The males leave to breed with other families but return to act as escorts for their own. These deep-diving whales maintain contact with a constant stream of chatter, perhaps coordinating their hunt for prey, sounding an alarm when danger threatens and guarding against separation. When hunting, they dive as far down as 3,000 feet to chase and catch squid in a high-speed round trip of 15 minutes.
