Simple homemade Arduino based alarm system. It emails and texts me when me door opens! It consists of:

Arduino
Ethernet Shield
Piezo Buzzer
Blue LED
Two long strands of 22 gauge wire

The system is not connected to a computer. Instead, it connected directly to the internet with an Ethernet shield. I get emails or texts when:

*the door opens
*the door has been kept open for more than 15 seconds (so if the door sensor falls off or something, I know.)
*the system reboots, so if I lose power I will know.

Uses a DHCP library to get an IP address. SMTP server is hard coded (as is the email address to send texts/emails to).

  • How did you send the text to your phone via ethernet?

  • @benos4000 Google "email to text"

  • Thanks for this project! Im missing the ethernet shield but ill get it to get this done, will this work with gmail smpt?

  • @caritoyjames Gmail requires SSL I think, so you'd need to add OpenSSL or some other library to use it.

  • Thanks I succeed to build my own alarm system with your clear explanations

  • Figured it out! I modded your program to send additional login info (email, password) to the smtp server before trying to send the email. It doesn't work with yahoo's server though, I had to use my ISP's smtp.

  • Hey, does this project still work? It would seem that yahoo has since implemented either SSL or TLS authentication, so simple SMTP login won't work anymore. Please let me know, since I definitely want to try out this project!

  • That's awesome! Now I should get a phone... I'll use my iPod for now. Can you send me the code you used?
