This is one of our latest videos (part of a set of 5 from this same species) from the field!!..stunning species that no matter if endemic or not, deserved a complete hour of watching and enjoying this afternoon. We have found Andean Cock-of-the-rock before in Western Andes near Jardin, but this time we just went far beyond and got to see up to 8 lekking males plus a couple of visiting females with our clients/birding friends in the last tour! This is the subspecies sanguinolentus from W Andes of Colombia that is much redder than the C Andes one. We enjoyed the loudly calls of these males while they were flying, displaying, and foraging near a little river in the town outskirts. I made this video in our Nov/Dec 2009 20days trip in Magdalena Valley + Central, Western & Eastern Andes (+ Santa Marta Mts) with friends/clients from Washington DC. Is not uncommon but also not everywhere.. when you got a lekking area you can see many males and some females relatively easy!... this is W Andes subspecies that is darker than nominal one. saludos, Diego.
