This is a live recording of Mark Matos & Os Beaches performing Heroin as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival at the Coda Supper Club in San Francisco. The video is by Last Wave Film. It was designed for live projection during the concert.

The All Tomorrow's Parties Festival gathered and featured an eclectic group of Bay Area musicians to cover the Velvet Undergound's seminal album Nico in its entirety. Each band was assigned a single song and the songs were performed in album-order. The show was basically conceived and curated by Charith Premawardhana of the Classical Revolution. The story is better told here in a news blog on the Blank Tapes' Website.

The event amounted to a local music scene triumph. These S.F. musicians made these songs their own, exorcising a song's essence or turning it inside-out. The classics were reinvented, built upon, collapsed.... Mark Matos & Os Beaches and the Blank Tapes channeled Heroin and I'm Waiting for My Man, respectively, into haunting bellows and fluid, refreshingly aggressive psychedelia; the VU classics would crescendo and then fitfully whittle themselves down to two mercilessly repeating Cagean notes. Or the California Honeydrops would reduce Run, Run, Run to a nearly accapella purity. All the while projected images of bananas spinning in a void or cool girls eating bananas whilst staring relentlessy into camera served as accompaniment.

The projections were produced by S.F. music and film producer Keith Dunn and designed, shot, edited by S.F. Director Kindrid Parker and cinematographer jd la fleur of Last Wave Film. In a playful, revisionist spirit, the video both serves as an homage and a satire of the Andy Warhol screen tests. Its test subjects are Cecile Parker, Melissa Turoff, Nora Toomey, and Kate Bowman.

The musicians featured at the festival were Mark Matos & Os Beaches, Liz Phair, Dave Mihaly, the Blank Tapes, Rupa Marya & Ara Anderson, Sarah Palmer & Edmund Welles, the California Honeydrops, Jazz Mafia & Crystal Monee Hall, the Jugtown Pirates, Meklit Hadero, Michael Musika, and Joe Lewis & Stephen Jenkins. The entire show was recorded live and released by Porto Franco Records as Undercover Presents the Velvet Underground & Nico.

Enjoy!
