One Indian state has banned fishing using machines during the breeding season. But some say the ban threatens their livelihood. It's breeding season in Tamil Nadu. Now the southern Indian state has imposed a forty-five day ban on mechanized fishing along its coastal areas. The ban is there to protect marine life. But fishermen complain it leaves them with no source of income. [Dhanush, Fisherman]: "The government has announced one-and-half months ban for during fish breeding season. Lots of people who rely on fishing as their main source of income, need at least 100 to 150 rupees a day to run their families. Since the government has banned fishing, there is nothing to eat." The fishermen are demanding more compensation from the government than the 500 rupees offered. [Venugopal, Fishermen Welfare Association]: "During the period of the ban in Tamil Nadu nearly two hundred thousand fishermen lose their incomes." It's said that nearly 100 million rupees is lost by the area's fishing community during the ban. With no other work available, the fishermen use the time to overhaul their boats and mend their fishnets.
