We'd heard that Riedel glassware was designed to enhance the flavor and aroma of wine... What? Does that even make sense? How can glass make a difference on how wine tastes?
Well, we decided to see for ourselves at a wine tasting event sponsored by The American Institute of Wine & Food (AIWF) and held at The Union Club in the Beacon Hill section of Boston. Dana Ginavan of the Riedel Glass Company compares wine tasted out of varietal specific glassware versus wine out of a commonly used wine glass, and the difference is stunning.
The shape of a glass, from the stem to the girth to the rim, makes a significant alteration to how we see, smell and taste wine. Try it for yourself if you don't believe us! But before you do, check out this quite interesting segment. We're sure you'll agree!
It makes all the difference. Just try any good wine with a normal supermarket glass and then the same bottle with the appropriate Riedel glass (or other brand proper glass for wine) and see for yourself. A simple no specified glass just kills every good wine in flavour and smell. The wine is totally different with a proper glass.
