The North American Black Bear is one of my absolute favorite species. They are a highly intelligent, adaptable animal and iconic symbols of all things wild. Spending a couple days with this family of black bears allowed me to see the most intimate Bear family moments. The cubs on this film were yearlings, and 2 cubs is a common number for Black Bears although sometimes they will have more depending on food availability. These cubs are soon to make their way in the world thanks to all the lessons taught by the mother bear who watches over them for the first couple years of their lives.
Black bears are excellent swimmers and climbers and can run at speeds of 30 miles per hour! They are omnivores taking advantage of whatever they can find from insects, grubs and honey to berries, fish and meat. This versatility of diet has no doubt helped them be as successful as they are. They have even learned to live in suburbia an some regions as long as us humans show patience with them. Making this film was an absolute delight and I am honored to share a glimpse into the world of the amazing Black Bear (Ursus Americanus).
