That is a rather ignorant comment to make. Video games "at that time" actually looked great. Looking back, they may look ugly.
Many people praised the "amazing" graphics of certain games. Of course, not so much on the Atari 2600 but the Intellivision and definitely the Colecovision.
hum, yeah, didn't really see it that way. You're right for that, of course : everything is relative.
However, the pixels are so big that you can't really figure out what it is, and that a little painful. So if I don't have any trouble with anything that is higher than a NES, I don't really what was made before. Game like Starcraft or Super Metroid are in my opinion really nice despite their age. But not so much for those game with big pixels...

So you should say "Those games look ugly NOW."
