Welcome back to itv gold 2 and we're pleased to be back with a gem from our ongoing "Best of British" season, "The Long Arm". Directed by Charles Frend and starring Jack Hawkins as Supt. Tom Halliday, John Stratton as Sgt. Ward, Dorothy Allison as the Superintendent's wife, Mary and Michael Brooke as his son Tony, the film carried the tagline, "The True Inside Story of Scotland Yard's Crime Busters!" The film concerns Scotland Yard detectives attempting to solve a spate of safe robberies across England beginning with clues found at the latest burglary in London. It is notable for using a police procedural style made popular by Ealing in their 1950 film "The Blue Lamp". If you're a U.S. viewer, you may know the movie as "The Third Key". As well as Ealing favourites Sam Kydd and Geoffrey Keen, look out for an early appearance by British actor, Ian Bannen, playing a workman, who is a hit and run victim.

  • Thanks from the US side. Jack Hawkins is one of my favorite actors.

  • this film really does invoke 1950,s britain or what we the public were encouraged to believe it to be.a few wrong uns ,selling lead on the qt.the odd geli gang, the reality was different.it was a tough decade possibly as hard as the previous 10 years .

do me a favour guv ! "love nest in balham". we had capital and corp punishment, teacher,s using the cane or what ever came to hand to control children.

the sun did shine more, and the flicks were better, the only way was up.

  • Jack Hawkins a brick as always; thanks for sharing this fabulous example of the 50's genre, they certainly were honest with the locations featured...

Superb Thames views from Hawkins' Old Scotland Yard office; back to London from visiting Llanberris Pass (garage) in North Wales, out of the train at Euston, via Gower Street en route to Scotland Yard. Peter Jones department shop (aka John Lewis) Kings Rd... and the Festival Hall locations when it was all bran new.. amazing to behold!!
