What does President Obama's budget say about his education priorities? What types of initiatives should we expect to see in the next year? And how will the budget affect the No Child Left Behind Act?

Melissa Lazarín of the Center for American Progress explains what the budget blueprint reveals about what types of initiatives we should expect to see in the next year and how the budget will affect the No Child Left Behind Act.

We have a mixed economy. "Big government" is a non specific vague monolithic term that collapses under scrutinization.

  • From birth ???.....

  • There ARE alternatives to bigger government. I'm not saying government is ALWAYS bad, but a lot of times it's inefficient and should stay out. There are plenty of market alternatives. Government is largely the problem and reason for such high healthcare costs. Costs were so much lower BEFORE government got involved, but people seem to have largely forgotten that, esp. those calling for UHC. They forget how crappy it is in foreign countries worldwide. Or they delusionally think it's good.

  • Americans kept voting in more and more Dems and gave the Democrats an actual 40-year majority and were too dumb to see how ridiculous their policies were until 1994. And then the GOP squandered their opportunities under Bush, and now, yet again, the big-gov't Dems can spend spend spend and tax all they want.

  • I love how big government folks from the Left and the Right fail to see just how disastrous their policies are. Rather than asking "Could it be possible that maybe some of our policies are to blame for making societal problems worse?", they simply say "We need to spend more and expand the size of government", as if it's NEVER their fault. Democrats' economic agenda is pretty much nothing but tax and spend. Sure, Republicans did it last 8 years, but Democrats have been doing this for decades.

  • I wonder when Obama will finally talk about repealing the disastrous NCLB bill, which a lot of Democrats as well as Republicans have criticized. Didn't he criticize it at least once on the campaign? Yet I haven't heard him talk about it at all since he became president. Must be politics as usual, once again. Say one thing on the campaign trail and do another when you actually get elected.

Those who have so much faith in Obama getting shit done really need to wake up.

  • The Federal government's only responsibility is to protect this country from foreign invasion and protect the rights of it's citizens, that's it. Not to educate,or health care, or energy, or transportation. What the Fed Gov has done by overtaking all of the above is removed competition between the states and the free market, as our founders intended.

  • Is there any Obama policy that this Center for American Digression doesn't like?

There should be no Federal Education Policy, it should be left up to the local and state government. Since the Federal Gov has been involved education has been on a steady decline. The reason for this is obvious to any logical person. When the FedGov gives money to states based on scores of minimum basic skills, schools base their curriculum on the minimum basic skills, resulting in students with minimum basic skills.

  • • $533.7 billion for the Department of Defense in FY 2010, an increase of $20.4 billion, or 4 percent, over 2009

Note: This figure is nearly TWICE the amount of the COMBINED money proposed for...

    Education

    Health care

    Energy

    Transportation

    and Veterans
