Tapping can be done without frets.
It doesn't feel as easy though.
But it is do-able and worth it if you are searching for a specific sound.

Perhaps you didn't notice the difference in the sounds he was producing? When he flipped the switch the first time, he went from fretless to fretted. The tones of a fretless instrument are much like that of a guitar played with a slide. The musician is not limited to the tones of the typical western scale. You can hear tones that are in between those of the western scale. When this musician switches to using frets, he plays some things that can only be achieved with frets--such as tapping.

Does the button raise a plateau under the strings so that it can resonate? I mad something like this for my acoustic guitar to give it a Sitar sound.
