To me, this is one the greatest songs of the sixties not to have been a hit...

Couldn't agree more. I get frustrated trying to figure out why.

Great stuff. Love the horns! I'm only familiar with the Posies version of it, but I like this too.

Nobody bought any of the Velvet Underground albums when they came out either.

It is a great song, marred by muddy production. And it would have been much been on YTY than CTA 102, which in the day was one of those songs which made you get up and move the needle.

You're right that this song should have been on Younger Than Yesterday. It fit the mood of that album. As it was, being the Late 60's, this was a "Lost Song" and for years I looked for it with only the memory of a few times on the radio. I finally found the single at a used record store in Missoula, Montana in 1972 while on a driving trip from Cincinnati. I couldn't believe how lucky I was. Be thankful for current technology, no one will have to hunt lost songs anymore.

Not a good argument; after all, the general public has bought some truly dreadful records by the truckload.
That said, this is a fairly good song elevated by an exceptionally good arrangement, performance and production. It certainly deserved to do better than it actually did. (Remember the lines from Gray's Elegy: "Full many a flower is born to blush unseen/And waste its sweetness on the desert air...")

This song is gorgeous.. The guitar signature is killer. Too bad the stereo version isn't up here. It's definitely a better mix. Crosby wasn't happy with this mono mix. It didn't help radio ignored it. It should have been included on the original "Younger Than Yesterday" album. I love the change in the middle and how the guitar signature is then doubled by the horn section. Sublime.

I have it on my ipod and like it. I also have Does Everyone Stare - Police on there as well. That would fail as a single too.
