As a born-n-raised Georgia resident and PTSD-disabled Marine Corps veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom I have found my way recently into gardening and want to grow my own food. I would love more info and help as I have almost no resources or a means to get barrels, soil, etc.

Easy answer: The barrels and soil are a one-time purchase, your fuel tank needs constant refilling. Moreover, after you get the barrels set up they will start producing food crops - which will soon pay for the barrels, and soon eventually help also with your fuel costs.
If you really want to save money and be more self-sufficient, purchase a Solar Oven Society Sport Solar Oven (w/reflectors); and then get a Stovetec Deluxe One Door Rocket Stove. Look them up here on Youtube.
