Geoff Thompson, Program Director for Sunshine Coast Health Center, shares the second in a series of videos exploring Lessons for Recovery from Meaning Therapists. In this installment he discusses Dr. Jefferson Singer's experiences and theories regarding recovery and relapse. Like Jon Diamond's ideas, previously discussed, Dr. Singer believes that the stories that addicts tell themselves about who they are and their place in the world is a major problem for them.
One thing that I have noticed is that there are a high proportion of people in "recovery" that have been shifted from place to place as children.
This happened to me. I lived in 4 different cities and had gone to 6 different schools by the time I was 10.
My self narrative became quite chameleon-like. I learnt to adapt my "self" to new people and situations as required. However, this left me with almost no sense of self.
Drug intoxication allowed me to access a "self" that was amenable to ME.
