I have a Atari 1050 disk drive that does not seem to read disks. It powers up ok, but when you try to boot it makes a loud screeching sound and the display says BOOT ERROR. The sound is not very good in the video clip. I cleaned the read/write head with alcohol and it was pretty dirty, but that does not seem to fix it.

i think with yours, though, the drive mechanism is not engaging. That won't likely get solved with a little cleaning. Is there felt enough to pressure the disk down?

i just 'fixed' mine. There were three or four parts that needed cleaning. Unhook power, remove the cover (6 screws underneath) and spot them easy by moving the drive mechanism. CLEAN: 1) the park sensor area. 2) the read/write head. 3) the rails. 4) the mech. advancer wheel (careful). You should be able to figure these out. This can address both reading and park sensor problems. I also *carefully put a little wd40 on the rails. Enjoy!

I would first check the switch on the door lever.
