The Iranian students didn't take hostages b/c of Saddam. The Iran-Iraq war was funded big time by the US, but the US funded Iraq BECAUSE of the crisis. The war was after the crisis took place. The reason why Embassy people were taken hostage was b/c the US had supported the Shah's extremely corrupt regime, as well as ousted the DEMOCRATICALLY elected prime minister in 1953 for a power-hungry dictator b/c of the fear that Iran would be taken over by Commies (USSR was right next door).
