This is a video with the original sound of the recordings from 22. Jan. 2009, 01:24am CET/CEWT. I call it Taos Hum because it's a common name for it and most people know what it is.

You need high quality headphones or a qualitative sub woofer system to hear the hum. With cheap headphones or PC sub-woofer systems it may not be audible.

-------
This is the raw record. It is not edited expect for the DC bias correction. The cable and the microphone was not shielded.

The frequencies between 1 and 20Hz are very interesting to me. The mic I used is capable of registering air pressure changes in the range of several seconds.
The corner frequency of the amp was set at about 8Hz. So at 0.8Hz I still had -40 to -20dB of signal, means I could have registered pressure changes caused by winds. But, I believe these signals were not acoustical signals but instead electric or electromagnetic. That also would explain why the amplitude is 1-2 orders (20-40dB) higher than the average (it should be the opposite).

I read some interesting text about ground currents caused by power lines.
See: http://www.vlf.it/kurt/elf.html

[...] In addition, the 50 Hz hum exists almost everywhere: not only in houses, but also out in nature. This is because the currents going back from the consumer loads to the power stations are partly using the natural ground as a conductor. Besides, all those high-voltage power lines crossing fields and forests are radiating the 50 Hz signal in a strong way. [...]
---
This may explain why the hum is audible also in the nature.
By the way, the "power signal" of a 50Hz sinus is always positive (both vertexes on positive side). So you get a 100Hz signal (force, attraction or whatever type of mechanical interaction), dugall

I produced this video after some persistent requests although I know it won't help to satisfy the Nay-Sayers and probably just lead to new discussion.

Nevertheless, I will take part in the discussion, but only if two conditions are fulfilled:

1. The arguer has to reflect his statements at least twice
2. The arguer tries not to polemize and if possible to use scientific argumentation

This means, to reflect, balance pro and contra and then respectfully write or ask.

  • the hum is probably all the noise in the whole world reverberating off the atmosphere

  • @phantaztix I should also add that I do have tinnitus, and the hum is a very distinct and different sound, very much separate from the tinnitus.

  • Many houses are made of wood fastened with nails, and most houses built after the 1920s or so have electrical wires in them, an alternating current (even at 120 volts) in a wire creates a changing magnetic field...This is not to say that's what you're hearing but on quiet winter nights I can hear electricity running through the wires...I have a homebrew Nintendo DS program that records 2 hours of bass in 4 megabytes that makes a 250 sample per second WAV file, use a NDS lite to record.

  • ALIIIIEEEENS.. :p

  • You're a Scientist! Changed our Lives!

  • @phantaztix does it sound like bass-ish white noise?

  • I'm from Guatemala and I've heard it the paste year and this year 2012

  • I hate this noise ! I hear it realy often !

  • @Bundyrumowns PANACEA ritual accumulates the special emotional energy of people and creates a miracle: people are healed, strikes and wars stop, earthquakes, tsunamis calm down. More than 250 000 people already felt the healing power of Panacea all over the world. PANACEYA takes place now in our city and due to it I really feel that we can help our Earth to get rid of sufferings...it is already calling for our help ...if you want I can check if there is PANACEYA in your city...

  • @Bundyrumowns One can notice that the nature got furious for the last few years: flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis are shaking our beloved planet. Everyday catastrophes take away hundreds of lives and there is no guarantee to people who closed to as that this will not happen to them. Lets look around! What is the value of all things if everything can disappear forever? Let us find the answer together…I have found the answer - it's a global prayer for our planet-PANACEYA.
