Typically composed of one or more indigenous fishes including whitefish and pike, gefilte fish is commonly found in clear glass jars on grocery shelves under brand names like Manischewitz, Rokeach, and Mother's. But isn't it fun to imagine what a real 'live' gefilte fish might look like prior to being caught, chopped up, formed into balls or loaves, and then boiled in a big pot?
Our search for Hypophthalmichthys nobilis gefiltis ended up in a most unlikely place, namely Chicago's famous John G. Shedd Aquarium. Join us on a rollicking romp through this fine institution, followed by a tip on how to prepare this delicacy the old-fashioned way!
