Ballad for Leon - Jewish partisan from Kyustendil Bulgaria
1921-1944
killed as partisan by the Fascist forces in Bulgaria during WW2

BALLAD FOR LEON
English tranlation: Dr. Nitzha Shtahl

A HORRIBLE WIND WHISTLES
A TREE SHIVERS IN FEAR
SINCE TWO WEEKS NOT DEAD NOT LIVING
FREEZING UNDER STARRY SKY CLEAR

IN MY HEAD COVERED WITH CURLS
A STORM IS RUNNING WILD
MY PERFORATED HEAD IS SHAKING SCREAMING
IN THE TEMPEST I DIE

CRAZY INSANE
MY SENSES ARE BEWILDERED
OVERWHELMED WITH AGONY
THE FOREST IS CRYING WITH ME

IN THE FREEZING COLD NIGHT
WILD DOGS ON ME BARK
BLACK DOGS IN FURY
TOWARD ME RUN
AND FULL SHINING MOON
LIKE POLICEMAN'S SUIT BUTTON
OPENS IT"S MOUTH TO DEVOUR ME ALIVE

I HAVE NO LEGS TO RUN ,MAMA
NO HAND TO HOLD A CANE
THOSE HORRIBLE DOGS TEAR MY FLESH, MAMA
AND SATIATED TO YARD AWAY RUN

IN FIELDS WIND MERCILESS BLOWING
AND THE SHAWL YOU GAVE ME , MAMA
FOR THE ROAD
IS FLYING IN PAIN
LIKE A BRIDE IN SORROW
LIKE GLOOMY LEAVES IN AUTUMN TWIST AROUND

IN THIS COLD NIGHT
TWICE I WAS DYING
BUT DEATH ALAS ON ME SPREAD NOT HIS WINGS
SO THAT NOW, A MIGHTY FREEDOM
LEADS ME TO DAWN
TO LIVE AMONG HOUSES CLOUDS AND SONGS

Music: The Israel Army Band
Conducted by Itzhak Ziko Graziani

  • Jews in other countries was also saved. In Denmark, a tiny country on the top of Germany, the 7.000 Danish jews was rescued by the fellow Danes, hidden in private homes, hospitals, churches and finally all but 450 was smuggled to Sweden during late 1943. Of the 450 Danes with Jewish background who was taken by the Germans "only" 51 died in the konzentrationslager Theresienstadt, where they where kept "relatively safe" due to pressure from the Danish State and from Sweden.

  • I am a Brit, with a property in Kyustendil. I know a little of the history surrounding the saving of Bulgarian jewry as a result of the efforts of the local MP, Dimitur Peshev, but have heard nothing about this, and am VERY interested. Can you tell me more ?

  • rest in peace, my Jewish brothers!

  • Mosada will never fall !!!, Shalom !

  • Uprising in Warsaw Ghetto was in 1943 (oganised mostly by Jewish left wing fighters). In 1944 was another uprising in Warsaw organised by the resistance. Both were crushed by the nazis. We shall never forget brave fighters and civilians who died.

  • his nickname is "The Bager"
