I created this video on www.xtranormal.com for my networking class. This vid explains the 7 OSI Model layers and what each of them does. Created by: Michael Belenske.

Words:
The Open Systems Interconnect, (OSI) Model was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1984...... Unlike the TCP/IP model, it does not specify the interaction of any specific protocols..........

The OSI model includes all functions, or tasks, associated with Inter-network communications, not just those related to the TCP/IP protocols...

okay starting from the bottom of the stack and going up. This is called the Bottom Up technique.......

The bottom layer is the Physical layer.. This layer defines physical means of sending data over a network device. It can be optical, electrical, or mechanical characteristics. Fast Ethernet, RS 232, and ATM are examples that are found in the physical layer................

Next up is the Data Link Layer... This layer defines procedures for operating the communication links. It also detects and corrects frame transmit errors........

Above that is the Network layer.... This layer routes packets according to unique network device addresses..........

The middle layer of the stack is the Transport Layer. It manages end-to-end message delivery over the network. It can provide reliable and sequential packet delivery through error recovery and flow control mechanisms.........

Next up is the Session layer.... This manages user sessions and dialogues. It also maintains logical links between systems.....

Above that is the Presentation layer.. It standardizes user data formats for use between different types of systems. It also encodes and decodes user data, encrypts and decrypts data, and compresses and decompresses data.....

Then the top layer of the stack is the Application layer... It defines interfaces between application software and network communication functions. It also provides standardized services such file transfer between systems. Telenet and FTP are examples that are found in the application layer...

these are were the seven layers of an OSI Model using Bottom Up... see ya....
