Time-lapse of Carey Beebe applying the first coat of color to a French Double Harpsichord: What takes twenty-six minutes in real life is compressed here to less than two.

After thorough preparation, the harpsichord is ready for its first coat of oil-based color. A right handed person paints from right, so the spine at the front of the instrument is the best place to begin. The case top of each side of the harpsichord is treated as the first job. It is painted with a small 1/2˝ brush, and the excess wiped off the side with White Spirit. A 2˝ fitch brush is then used to paint the side. Paint can be applied in any direction, but must be finished by laying off lightly with the brush, blending the fresh paint in with what has already been applied and finished. Working around the case, the tail comes next, then the bentside and cheek.

  • There are many variables: Design, style, materials, workmanship, quality, decoration You should not expect to find many new harpsichords for under USD10K, and prices might range up to USD70K or more.
