the shields would take most of the shots in artilery combat so they dont have an other choice but to go point blank (as seen in episode 6 the star destroyers outgun the rebel fleet in point blank but where quickly to die against the Home One and the superior fighterpower the rebels had(as to mention if an naboo shuttle can bypass and Controll ship with a hell of firepower put onto it then artilery combat in SW is bullshit to take down ships)
-
@liamdudeeee Actually, this is typical. I own all 6 movies, and this really is standard.

@KenoshiAkai Knife fight battles like in this scene are rare in the star wars universe. they are usually just artillery bombardments over hundreds of kilometres. But as its clearly shown in this scene, there were so many ship that knife fights like that are inevitable.

@DarthAmbrosius I understand that ship design in the Star Wars universe is guided by what looks cool rather than what is practical or realistic. I just find it amusing that the ships are sporting 1940's style manned artillery guns that are firing out of little gun ports like on an 18th century ship. It would be far more practical to have the guns mounted on external turrets that have a much wider angle where they could fire.
-
@DarthAmbrosius I'm not sure about the older movies' turrets being more advanced. Technology in the Star Wars 'verse has been stagnant for thousands of years. But in any case, our modern military has been big on killing targets from many miles away. If they had a warship like one of these? They'd annihilate Osama from orbit. He'd never see it coming.

@Idazmi7 This. All of the fanwankery on the part of rabid Star Wars fans about the alleged firepower of Star Wars spacecraft is undermined by watching the damned movies. No where do any of the starship weapons display any firepower anywhere close to multi-megaton nuclear weapons. The people who spout this nonsense have no idea how powerful a megaton of TNT is, let alone 200,000 megatons.
-
@KenoshiAkai You see, they have to use a shell for each blast while on the older star wars movies the turbolasers are advanced enough that they run directly off of the ships reactor core. Anyway... the broadside engagement is relatively effective considering the technology they have and the method it is employed on the ship. If America had a Venator class star destroyer they would broadside engage with Osama Bin Ladin's battleships too... just to show off.
-
@KenoshiAkai well i guess that's "cute" and all but a reverting of battle tactics like that is necessary if you outrun tactical ability by advances inweapon technology. They have reached a point where their weapons are outrunning their ability to fight as in world war 1 where we were forced to shoot each other from trenches. But from a purely civilian point of view... it's cool as shit to see two massive ships blowing the hell out of each other with semi-primitive turbolaser batteries.
-
@karaya111 You and your similars are the reason I commented here:
The above video proves you wrong: that wedge shaped ship is an Acclimator, and it is NOT shooting more than about 20 sticks of dynamite per shot. You are the kind of Star Wars fan I hate.
-
@Idazmi7 Power? I show you shomething: Aclamator Class Assault Ship ( The weakest battleship in the SW universe ) Offensive and defensive systems: These ships were armed with 4 heavy torpedo launch tubes; 24 point-defense laser cannons, rated at 6 megatons per shot; and 12 quad turbolaser turrets, each rated at a maximum of 200 gigatons per shot. They were also armed with concussion missiles. And where is the Venator class? The Victory class or the Imperial class ships?

Isn't that cute? The spaceships think they're 17th century sailing ships. Shooting their cannons through open gunports and all.
