Hokies For Crouse:

"Hokies For Crouse" was initiated when Bethany Darnley, a senior human development major at Virginia Tech, created a Facebook event to accept physical donations and gifts for the Crouse family. After realizing the effort by Darnley, Drew Jenkinson idealized an online donation movement. After finding out that Darnley was room mates with Jenkinson's Virginia Tech Relay For Life director, Anna Tobia, Jenkinson knew he had to bring his idea to fruition.

Jenkinson, a senior studying communication and marketing at Virginia Tech, connected with Darnley to push her efforts online. The duo, who had never met, created a Paypal account for donations, a web site and twitter account (@hokiesforcrouse). Bethany managed the community outreach while Jenkinson progressed the online effort.

The two solidified an official, streamlined effort with the Deriek W. Crouse Memorial Fund and spread the movement through a frivolous social media campaign. Before they knew it, the movement had taken on a life of its own. The world-wide Virginia Tech community jumped on board to support the Crouse family and show the world that such horrific events did not define the Hokie nation.

The Hokie nation was more defined by its aggressive support of its own family members. While we mourn the loss of Officer Crouse and acknowledge the horrific pain that this event has caused his family and friends, we also want to stress that the world-wide Hokie community is here, and always will be, for the family and friends of our beloved Officer Deriek Crouse.

We are Virginia Tech.
