  • Let me offer this opinion: the song is not so much "very, very dark" as sad, bitter, and bittersweet; it is more universal than just "how we all treat the homeless." Nicely sung by Dusty, but listen to Randy Newman singing it--heartbreaking.

  • dusty was one of the best vocalists of all time. this is a great performance. john

  • A lovely lady and one of the best singers ever. full stop.

  • I heard it once said 'Our mortal forms are but shadows of a purer reality' Certainly true in Dustys case, she was an angel amongst us,great singer & so beautiful.R.I.P Dusty, give anything to bring you back!

  • Dusty's version is BY FAR the BEST redition of this song. Utterly amazing!

  • RANDY NEWMAN?!?!?

Yeah, I know He wrote the Song, but NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE CAN DO ANY SONG BETTER THAN DUSTY SPRINGFIELD!!!!

    I SAY FUUUUUHHHH, RANDY NEWMAN!!!!

    CANNOT STAND HIM!!!!

  • I love this arrangement of the song. The arranger changes the chords around slightly.

I think Dusty was intelligent enough to understand the song. She felt every song that she chose to sing.

I'm not very bright, but even I get the irony.(Duhhh)

  • Randy Newman songs are always misunderstood... theres always irony..check out Neil Diamonds version.

  • What makes you think she didn't understand the song? The line about 'human kindness overflowing' is in the original lyrics - her delivery of this and 'that's the way to treat a friend' are knowingly ironic. (Watch her expressive hand movement on the latter.) This was a song she fell in love with from a demo-disc by Randy Newman himself and felt closest to personally. Her interpretation is bittersweet and subtly poised. You should give her more credit for being an intelligent artist.

  • She should have covered a song she understood. This is NOT a song about human kindness. Anything but.

  • Piffle if you'd like. She should have covered a song she understood instead of ignoring the lyrics of this one (which she changed). She's a great singer...who shouldn't have touched this song.

  • oh piffle!
