Where i live (Germany) it's very common to put sand into the hamster toilet and change it every day or every other day. Supposedly hamsters prefer peeing in sand and are more likely to use the toilet that way. In addition, here they recommend offering a big sand bath all the time in the cage. Actually there is sand which will naturally form clumps from hamsters' pee, which can be taken out with a spoon quite easily, so I can recommend that for ease of handling :)
