How did the Japanese views of China changed during the Meiji Period?

Focus: Japanese's Perspective/perception of China during Meiji Period 1868-1912

Margaret Mehl's article's main argument: the rise and fall of interest in Chinese culture was not directly related to the progress of Sino-Japanese relation, this view was justified by observing the essay which was written by Fukuzawa Yukichi in 1885.

Part A: Japanese View of China influenced by the Chinese Studies漢學and ideas during Meiji Period

2 Discipline: Language and philosophy

Language: Kanbun漢文
• Heavily Sinified version of Japanese
• Adopted as official writing system since the 5th century (A period of Tang China influence)
• It was the language of the scholars and the elite class
• Had a profound influences on Japanese spoken language (syntax and concept)

Philosophy (political & moral):
• 尊王攘夷 sonno jo-i: respecting the monarch and repelling the barbarians
• 明治 Mei-Ji: Bright ruler, from 易經 I Ching
• The renewed interest in Confucian study in Japan, scholars as well as ruling elites were greatly involved in the study and adoption of Confucian philosophy into state ideology.

• Neo-Confucianism, 考證學 koshogaku, school of verifications and proofs
