John Eagle Honda Donates $25,000 to Houston Food Bank
HOUSTON (Dec. 23, 2010) — John Eagle Honda of Houston is donating $100 to the Houston Food Bank for every car they sell leading up to Christmas. The donation program started the week after Thanksgiving and will culminate with a check presentation on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 2 pm at the Food Bank's office, 3811 Eastex Freeway.
Mac DeLaup, president and managing partner of John Eagle Honda Houston, expects the donation to be approximately $25,000. "We'll be donating $100 for every car sold right up to the day before our check presentation," says DeLaup. "In the spirit of the holidays, we feel it's important to help our neighbors in need. With so many Houstonians without enough food to eat, we are happy to know this donation will help the Houston Food Bank provide the gift of a holiday meal to many families."
In addition to pledging $100 for every vehicle sold, John Eagle Honda is also collecting nonperishable food donations at their dealership for donation to the Food Bank.
Houston is currently experiencing its highest-ever demand for food assistance, with the Houston Food Bank's member agencies reporting an increase of up to 50% more requests for food over last year. More than 900,000 southeast Texans are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from, will they have access to enough food to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. According to USDA figures, Texas has the second highest food insecurity rate (approximately 17.4%) in the nation. And sadly, 47% of the people fed by the Houston Food Bank are children.
"In this tough economy, every dollar literally counts, and in a significant way," says Brian Greene, president and CEO of Houston Food Bank. "For each $1 donated to the Houston Food Bank, we can provide three meals to someone struggling with hunger. John Eagle Honda's generous donation will make the holidays brighter and fuller for them."
John Eagle Honda of Houston has a long history of giving back to those in need. In 2004, the John Eagle group donated $100,000 to the Red Cross to assist victims of the Indian Ocean Tsunami and in 2005 they donated over $25,000 to the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina victims.
