All in the Family - Too Good Edith

...by request, here are the final moments from the All in the Family episode "Too Good Edith" as aired on April 9, 1979

In the series final episode, Archie is so busy prepping for a big St. Patricks Day party at the bar that he doesn't realize Edith is really sick. She's suffering from phlebitis and needs to stay off her feet. Instead, due to Archie's insistance (and ignorance) she pushes herself by cooking all the food for his big St. Patty's Day party, nearly crippling herself in the process.

The final moments in this episode are very touching and perfectly illustrate the relationship that existed underneath between these two classic television characters.

The show would be retooled and return in the Fall of 1979 as "Archie Bunkers Place" with Jean Stapleton making a handful of appearances in that following season.

This is how the characters should have ended. In the end, with the spin off junk they did Edith dies and Mike & Gloria split up for good. What a fun way to end the roles of such lovable realistic characters that we all love.

These two characters were so real...so believable - --it takes such talent to make that happen! I can't think of another sitcom that could evoke such emotions as to have you belly laughing one moment and in the next, bring you to tears with the most tender of scenes. These characters really do live on and the stories/shows made lasting impressions in our memory

I remember reading that when they did Archie Bunker's place, they were trying to decide what to do with Edith's character, I guess trying to decide how to write her out, and Jean Stapleton said 'just kill her off, she's not real', and somebody the writer or the producer or somebody, looked at her and said 'she is to me'.
