Avatar - Can this be our generation's Star Wars?

Avatar is an upcoming 3-D science fiction epic film directed by James Cameron, due to be released on December 18, 2009 by 20th Century Fox. The film is Lightstorm Entertainment's latest project, and Cameron's first fictional film in 12 years, having last directed Titanic in 1997. With an estimated budget of $237 million, Avatar is currently the fourth most expensive film.

The storys protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms, some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Navi, a sentient humanoid race, who are considered primitive, yet are more physically capable than humans. Standing three meters tall (approximately 10ft), with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Navi live in harmony with their unspoiled world. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Navi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Navi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies that are controlled by a human "driver" through a technology that links the driver's mind to their Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Navi female, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched only by her ferocity in battle.

Over time, Jake integrates himself into Na'vi's clan, and begins to fall in love with Neytiri. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Navi, forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

I watched Avatar again some days back and had to laugh. :D The avatars are not perfect. Jake Scully has 5 fingers on each hand whereas Ney'tiri has four. Such is the genius of Avatar.

No Avatar was not this generations Star Wars, neither was Harry Potter, Lord of the RIngs came close - but the most culturally significant and groundbreaking film was probably The Matrix - yes the sequels sucked. but The Matrix is the closest we got to Star Wars. Brilliant film.

i just pray they DONT make ANY more avatar movies (and chances are they wont) james cameran said he doesn't want to be like George Lucas and spend his life making a franchise

O and ps i am 15 and grew up with shity movies (twilight), shity music(beiber), shity TV ( jap anime bull shit) and now a high res 3D block buster version of pocahontas

I feel i have to reply to this comment.

Jakes Avatar has five fingers becouse it is a mix of human and Na'vi DNA and what you get is some of the human features coming through in the end result. In this case its that the Avatars have five fingers and toes, Where as the Na'vi have four fingers and toes.

Also id like to add im of the Star Wars generation and for ME Avatar is my new Star Wars i cant wait for the next two films....
