German Shepherds... From REAL German Shepherds to what we have today. SAD.

German Shepherds have suffered the same fate as many other breeds under the umbrella of the AKC, the Kennel Club and many other organizations who claim to "protect" man's best friend.

The truth is of course a completely different story. Fleeting fashion, breeder whims and the monetary gain resulting from the sale of sick and or deformed animals are the reasons why dogs are only bred for "beauty" these days.
A healthy dog is a beautiful dog in my opinion.
Any exaggeration which results in a suffering and sometimes downright crippled dog should be punished instead of rewarded.
Unfortunately all these people care about is a dog that has the current trend's look so they can sell their animals to people who then will be stuck with a sick and suffering family member.
I have addressed this issue many times before regarding different breeds with very predictable results...
While dog owners who have suffered along with their four legged loved ones agree and support my exposing these practices, many breeders called me a liar and got downright nasty with me.
Of course a breeder will be upset because exposing their inhumane practices results in less sales of their "product".
Dogs are NOT a "product" but living, feeling beings and we should make sure that only good breeders who understand this will be rewarded.
Dogs should be bred for health first, temperament second and then for looks. Unfortunately the AKC and most big dog registries allow and reward breeders to create "beautiful" cripples for profit.
We, as a people need to demand healthy dogs...
We as a people need to demand straight backed Shepherds so good breeders can make a living while bad breeders have to change their ways.
I will search for and find more proof on the changes forced upon many breeds by breeders and dog registries which have created millions of suffering dogs all over the world.

this is all just bullshit its evalution, the dog is a working breed that used alot of its power from its hind legs all day every day over time there body has just made there backs and legs more equiped for running all day, just like humans our apendix used to be way bigger than it is today but evulution has changed that because we no longer need it as much as there is no pain for the shepherd there is no difference its the way its born its now natural for the gsd to be bred like that

If you have watched (show dog variety) GSD's wobble around on their weak hind legs barely able to move and if you actually looked at the statistics on how much HD has increased over the years then you would not have posted such an ignorant response.

It is such a shame that breeders today only care about the money they make and not care about the health and soundness of the dogs they breed. Dogs should be bred for HEALTH,SOUNDNESS,TEMPREMENT,LO­NGEVITY. Not just to look like a show dog bred for looks and nothing else. breeders years ago knew how to breed tough sound working dogs, sadly this knowledge seems to have been lost. Its not fair on the dogs to breed just for show and money!

All of you claim to know about breeders and what they strive for. If you visit any decent breeder you would know how much temperament is crucial in deciding whether or not a dog is to be used to future breeding. As far as HD and health is concerned, German lines are required to not only produce top ranks in show, but also in working ability also. All dogs must pass a hip certification and if the breeder know what he/she is doing then the dogs live long, happy and balanced lives.

I totaly agree. I have had the pleasure of having 8 "American" dogs. I see the differance..My "papered" dog was a desendent of Ch. "Lance of Fran-Jo" of the 60's and his back was perfect in 1990..

The sooner all countries introduce the Breed Suitability test, the better. In Germany the progeny of unsuitable parents are worthless.

I absolutely agree with you. This guy here is a part of this dog abusing self indulgent machine so I am not surprised at all that he is defending it in such an irrational way. If you read what he is saying you can see that it is literally dripping with ignorance, intolerance and his mindless pursuit of using innocent dogs to get his "ribbon" at any cost. These kind of people are often insane enough to have convinced themselves that they are dog lovers.

@MrMoys13 Except that no ethical, truely animal loving person would ever breed a GSD according to German or American GSD show or club rules. The GSD should be a beautiful, healthy, natural looking dog with an excellent mind, something the hyena look does not give you; a show dog just has to stand for the judge without flinching or biting so testing for temperament and brains is so marginal, people who are just breeding for a ribbon, barely register it, plus a narrow head is often encouraged.

I have a female gsd.. She is a west german show/working line with North American Show/working line.. She has a straight back and all in all is great! She has good looks (No crippleness) and great drive and work :D she is the best.. She costed $2,500. Her father was pure west german show/working and her mother was half west german and north american show/working. So my GSD Willow is mostly west German.. But only a bit North American.
