I don't see why it would be clever. But blowing the head gasket has nothing to do with the engine overheating, and you can run pretty much any older stock power engine for a little bit like this without doing any damage to it. It takes a while for the temp to go up. Plus thermostats don't even open untill 5 or more minutes of running. So the water doesn't even flow through the engine.
The head gasket blew because it was rusted apart. it sat with water in it for years.

Maybe you blew the head gasket during this video? Not clever to run it for so long at with these revs without cooing system. it has to blow...

only 90 horsepower?I wouldnt be surprised if it became a POS under heavy load.

ah... i don't think this was a california one. Had no cat. and i think the vacum lines were different.

The California smoged version in 1978 had 90 hp, though it ran well enough.

That really sounds strong.

there it is, thank you. i knew it was the lower of the 2.
I think a head gasket often blows because of too much heat, so the metal expands and presses the gasket too much. But I agree that the long period with old water could be the problem. ;-) I think the head pretty fast go up in temperature with no water at all in it.

Yeah, i think from the metal expanding and warping the head, it might take pressure away from the gasket and some spots, and blow in those spots. Yeah, it was a shame, but it did have just plain water in it for at least a few years. didn't crack the block, but rusted the gasket to nothing.
True, water around the cylinder would help slow the temperature increase. Even without moving
