  • Excuse the commentator, but Johnnie did not "knew" Dorothy, he LOVED her and she him. Her column did promote him, but he made it on his unique, incredible talent. Circa '51 while playing the Oak Room at the Plaza, he went to Tiffany & Co. South on 5th Ave. Dorothy adored pearls and he chose an incredible strand saying: send the bill to me at the Plaza. He was then making 35 grand a week and was intimidated when the bill was for an entire month's salary. I so miss you Johnnie, DonStM

  • "Renew2day" -- The biography you want to buy on Amazon.com is "Beyond the Marquee" by Tad Mann. Tad was Johnnie's road manager from the late 1950s until his last concert tour, which was 1989. Although Johnnie Ray had a drinking problem, Tad did not and does not. He's a reliable storyteller.

  • Tony Bennett said that Johnnie Ray was "The Godfather of Rock 'n Roll". I read that some time back.

Johnnie was known to sing for bar patrons when asked, for free.

There's a biography of him. It would be hard to find, today. I've been searching for it!

  • @maxhaddrall Billy Crystal used to do a Joe Franklin bit on SNL about twenty years ago which was all about Joe's perceived inadequacies as an interviewer. Joe was more about schmoozing with the guests.

  • Joe Franklin's turn of mind leaves a lot to be desired, but at least one of his fans or crew members saved this rare audio of Johnnie talking without a script.

  • i honestly thought he passed away in the early 60's............i did not know he was still around up until 1990.........

  • Thanks friend...

  • According to Wiki..."His exposure during the new era of cable television was limited to a few seconds in Dexys Midnight Runners' 1982 music video for Come On Eileen, using archival footage of Ray from 1954."

  • Thanks friend..
