By 1879 Bodie boasted a population of about 10,000 residents with 2,000 buildings, and became known as the "most lawless, wildest and toughest mining camp the Far West has ever known."

The town became more known for its wild living than for its big gold resources. Every other building on the mile long main street was a saloon
Killings occurred with monotonous regularity.

Two fires, one in 1892 and the other in 1932, ravaged the business district. Bodie faded into a ghost town during the 1940's.

  • Thanks for the wonderful well done video. I've known Bodie before it became a state park. I hunted sage hens with my dad in Bodie in the early 60's when the state hired a care taker to watch it. It has always had a haunting draw for me. It's a great place to lose yourself in. If you visit, stop by and say hi to Rosa Mae.

  • Thank you. Do you have any pictures of Bodie in 60's? It will be great see them for me.

    Who is Rosa Mae?

    Regards

  • couldn't really get a true sense of place because of the filters and effects taking over.

  • i wonder who is the last person leaving the country? would they left all in one go togther?

  • I took a tour here 10 years ago

  • Awesome place! And great music for the video!

  • Does somebody look after it all? I can't help but wonder how those things still remain there without them being stolen or trashed? I'd love to check it out, even though it's so spooky.
