This 14-minute video from RealTraps explains the basics of room layout and acoustic treatment, and presents practical solutions to many common problems. The focus is on home theaters, but all of the information applies equally to professional recording studios and mastering rooms.

If you have technical questions about this video that require a reply, please do not post them here as comments. YouTube is not a good venue for a technical exchange. Please post your questions in whatever audio forum you know me from, or post in my acoustics forum at www.musicplayer.com.

  • I noticed you dont use those home theater style seats with the high back head rests. Is there a reason for not going that route? Does that kind of seat block the the direct radiating sound from the surrounds? What's up? Im about to buy either a sofa or a set of home theater style seats ( row of 3) with the high back. What do you recommend?

  • @bujoun76 Yes, high back seats are not recommended. Not only because they block sound from the rear, they also create strong reflections. Go to the RealTraps web site, then find the link to the Articles page on the home page. Then see the RFZ article.

  • Is there a simple method for testing a room for good acostics, if you're performing live and intend on recording a video for Youtube?

  • @huliniswhoiam Yes, go to the RealTraps web site, find the link on the home page to the articles, then look for the Room Measuring article.

  • 240p should be illegal!

    Great info though...

  • @bujoun76 LOL, that video is 5 years old. There's a version on our web site at higher res, but the info is still the same. :-)
