Wheels.ca: Pedal car meets the law

Reminiscent of the Flintstone's car, the "Shared Propulsion Car" is a 1986 Buick Regal that has been converted to a pedal car as part of an art installation by Montreal artist Michel de Broin. Last fall, it ran afoul of the law for safety violations and the case will be heard in a Toronto court Thursday April 3, 2008. The cop was been a complete ass. WTF was he asking the person for a license? There is NO license for a pedal car, any more than there is a license for a pedal driven bicycle, tandem, tricycle or quadricycle. It's NOT a motor vehicle.

To be fair, I can see why the cop was like that.

It's a large vehicle, with no insurance, no safety features and 4 passengers. What would happen if another vehicle hit them? You can't put it in a cycle lane, because it's too big.

Now before everyone jumps on me, consider this. Would you still feel the same way if this thing caused an accident involving your car, your wife/husband, your child? You couldn't get an insurance claim.

It's a good laugh yes, but don't pedal it on a road.

With the right gearing and slimmer tyre this thing would go FAST! And that body shell would mean it's still safer than any motorcycle. My idea for a pedal car is a Smart Car, perfect compact size, bare tridon safety shell is strong like an F1 car, 2 seater pedal car with electric assist for steep hills! Pedal powered Smart Car!

this is just insaine. that car is now a really cool pedal powered masterpiece. this is my im movng from 50,000 population roseville california to 244 population hanksville utah. that tiny town has the same rules as the 40's. nooone would care enough (law wise) to do anything against this.... poor guys, there just tryin to build and use something cool

How would it be unsafe if he kept it to streets with a low speed limit? I mean, if he took that thing on the interstate highway, sure, unsafe, but going 20 miles an hour in the city? It's weird, but not unsafe.
