because you can't break ribs while punching an armpit. You may dislocate the shoulder but then you still have to deal with the other arm. if you break ribs in the upper ribcage, you've disabled your opponent completely by impeding his breathing.

if you have the speed to do it, why go for the ribs when you can punch into the armpit itself?

@MileBanderas He never said that the shomen uchi was the atemi. Him striking that vital point was the atemi, obviously.

@GabrielGroverMan The trick is to never put your body in a position to receive the blunt force of an attack. You want to be in a position to "shear" his force off your arm to keep his momentum up and take him off balance.

Because the other 3 guys would punch the shit out of you before you properly got him into the air...
In Aikido most of the time you assume to have multiple opponents.
And trust me, you don't want to face an Aikidoka solo... It's a rather painful experience when they can concentrate on you.
