Here are some vintage CSXT trains passing through Sterling, Ohio at the former Erie Lackawana interlocking tower, plus we go up stairs and sit in for a short time with the operator this video was made in 1988. Back before the wide cabs and ditch lights and other stuff.

  • That's pretty cool. Noticed a couple of things:

    No grafitti.

Much more of a mix of freight than now.

    Thank you.

  • at 10:42, Sterling tower still had it's blue Conrail sign. Eventhough CR gave up on the old EL mainline many years prior. Cool!

  • It looks like the lineside poles were still up from the EL.

  • Amen. Now days everything is two wide cabs, no local control anywhere and if you get near anything you are a terrorist and get arrested. What a sad state this country has become in just 20 years since this was shot. Thanks so much for taking us back to better times. Great footage here.

  • I live in the area, and downloaded the "Sterling Wreck Report" back in 1996. Very interesting read!

In this video, we hear the tower operator telling the phone caller "Bil Green? No, he left at 3 o'clock." I believe Bill Green was the tower operator the night of that crash in 1965.

  • It certainly is-happened in Jan. of 1965. I railfan there in the warmer weather, & spoke to a longtime railfan there a few years ago (who has since passed on) & told me he was there after the wreck as an observer. The tower has been gone for a # of years, but still a great place to go. It -would- be more interesting if the old EL main still was in operation & crossed over there.

  • Lots of history at that place, isn't this where a B&O crew fell asleep, ran through the interlocking and basically hit an Erie train head on because the intersection was at such a low angle?

  • back then they didnt have DPU"s
