A new high-speed rail service between Russia's two biggest cities has begun operating.

The Sapsan express is Russia's fastest train, capable of speeds of 350km per hour.

Nicknamed "the bird on rails", it covers the distance between Moscow and St. Petersburg in less than four hours.

The Sapsan can carry more than 600 passengers and offers high-end comfort at prices ranging from 2,000-5200 roubles.

It will leave from Moscow three times a day.

The total cost of the project exceeded one billion euros.
