UN Security Council envoys have issued a statement condemning human rights violations and use of force against civilians by the Syrian government, amid a tank attack on Hama, a city of 800,000 residents.

The text was adopted on Wednesday after three days of heated discussions by the 15-member body, as a council statement rather than as a resolution.

The statement "condemn[s] widespread violations of human rights and the use of force against civilians by the Syrian authorities".

Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from the UN in New York.

  • Syria's killing their own people & the US wants to go to war with Iran who isn't. LOL WTF?

  • wat da heck man, ground hogs day!!

  • @phooey108 , Syria for decades has been arm supplier to Hezbollah. the major link between Iran and hezbollah is Syria, if that gets cut off, things are going to change alot for a terrorist group like Hezbollah.

the main issue is not iran, hezbollah or Israel..... innocent syrians who are being massacred by Assad is what needs to be dealt with by the international community.

protesters have made it clear that they are not going voilence, Assad made it clear to kill all who stand in his way.

  • @stevenbford1

you've just laid out a plan to blow up the middle east. Syrians must take down the regime themselves. Any outside military intervention WILL involve Iran, the Hezbollah and Israel slugging it out and blowing up the region.

  • along with air strike on Military bases, I think they need to send troops just to keep the peace where its needed. Assad is not going to stop the slaughter. it's been 5 months, Assad's brutality has increased many folds since march.

  • @kakashixsharingon There is always a moderate al-Qaeda presence in the Middle East, but on this occasion it is practically non-existent, the people are united in the face of oppression. Some defecting military units in Syria have fired back, as have some armed people, but again, this was because they were aggressively shot at first. Such incidents are minimal.

  • @Benad361 can you prove that Al-Qaeda has no part to play or any covert Islamist extremist groups ... they keep shouting allah akbar these people are looking for death, they pray for it everyday they believe to die as a mortor is the greatest glory in the world whereas normal people would want to live hence why only the middle east is suffering from this problem not the developed countries and how can you justify they are innocent and that they did not open fire first(self defense)

  • @kakashixsharingon Innocent people being massacred are al-Qaeda?

  • Great more Al-Qaeda rebels guess Gaddafi isn't the only one thats got his hands full... when did this organisation spread this quickly .. well thats less Islamist extremists to worry about ...

  • @stevenbford1 You bickering is no different then the UN bickering. Time for NATO to save the day again but NATO is already fighting a crazy tyrant who killed 4-5 times more people then the Syrian regime. Also if you want to see action...would you throw a pie at Putins face and tell him to stop supporting Syria and to go against it and actually take the initiative by doing what he want to do. Also tell him to stop stopping the west from putting some real hard sanctions on Syria.
