@posernotricer because nothing in BMW's lineup at the time was big enough to hold the V12, even the 7-series. The V12 in the X5 is a test-bed for the 1999 BMW V12 LMR prototype car, the physical heads are twice as wide to contain the larger valvetrain, extra camshaft on both sides etc. the 7 series was a single cam V12.

@posernotricer because everyone thought it was impossible to do the nürburgring in under 8 minutes in a SUV, He did it.
