Monday, Dec. 15 is a day I will not soon forget, not for the fact that my dad was injured, but for the acts of kindness and love that were demonstrated by individuals within the Whiteville community.

That day my dad was walking for exercise back and forth on his driveway while Mom had gone to her scheduled doctors appointment.

Dad felt dizzy and fell, striking his head on the concrete driveway. No one else was home at the time; however, across the street, the Columbus Christian Academy was conducting a fire drill when someone noticed Dad lying on the driveway.

Several teachers hurried over and assisted with Dad, calling the local rescue squad. Others made phone calls based on numbers Mom had posted on their phone book, calling me as well as relatives in the area. There was also a gentleman driving by who took the time to stop and offer assistance.

Dad was taken to the hospital. Several teachers stayed at the house cleaning up outside, plus leaving a note for Mom to read upon her return home.

When Mom arrived at the hospital, relatives were already there providing comfort. Shortly after Dad was treated, Mom was able to bring him home.

The next day, Mom and Dad had their hearts touched in a special way once again. While seated in the living room, the door bell rang.

Upon opening the door, to their amazement, a group of children were lined up in the front yard with several teachers nearby. This group of young people were from the Columbus Christian Academy. They all began singing Christmas carols and when they finished a young child stepped out and presented my dad with a huge Christmas Teddy Bear. The individuals who assisted did not respond seeking accolades. They responded based solely on the fact they are kind, considerate, helpful people who truly care for their neighbors, whoever they may be.

From my family, I sincerely Thank You for the greatest early Christmas gift we have ever received. May God bless you all.
