First on ITALICS we join the thousands of people lining Fifth Avenue celebrating Italian Heritage and Culture at the 67th Annual New York City Columbus Day Parade. The Annual Parade, sponsored by The Columbus Citizen's Foundation, features 35,000 Marchers lead by Grand Marshall Joseph J. Plumeri, Philanthropist & Business Executive. We'll join the Italics Cameras Crews from all over 5th Avenue as they document all the color, action, marching bands and Dean Anthony J. Tamburri and as he talks with Italian and Italian American Political, Business and Community Leaders along with other well known Celebrities.
Next on ITALICS, we'll go to a symposium entitled, "Italian American Mental Health : Research and Praxis", held recently at the Calandra Institute. The Symposium was the second in a series exclusively developed by the Professional Counselors at the Calandra Institute. There is an increasing recognition that self-identification with regard to race and ethnicity exerts a critical influence on psychological development both in the pathways seen as available to the individual and the choices made as a result. Italian Americans face an unusual challenge in their ability to decipher these identity codes because of their muddled historical racial/ethnic categorization. It is further the case that systematic discrediting of the chosen identity matrix can have a devastating effect on identity development and psychological well being. The implications of these factors on emergent identity and the need for identity validation will be discussed. A Panel of Three Clinicia ns will examine their psychotherapeutic work with three different Italian American clients. Associate Professor Donna Chirico of York College/ CUNY presents the Keynote presentation; "The Importance of Self-Identification in a Multi-Ethnic Social Environment." (Taped: 10/25/11)
Italics: The Italian American Magazine is a monthly presentation in the CUNY Presents timeslot, which takes a regular look at activities of prominent Italian-Americans in various walks of life, including arts, business, government, and academia. Italics is now in its third decade serving the Italian-American community.
Italics is hosted by Anthony Julian Tamburri, Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute of Queens College/CUNY and Professor of Italian & Italian/American Studies.
Italics is co-produced with the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute at Queens College/CUNY.
