The Dark Side of the Gospel
Song: 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' by Blind Willie Johnson (1927)
This is a film about life without grace - inspired by Paul's Epistle to the Romans Chs 1-3 and the films of Wim Wenders (and a couple of U2 videos - and Pennebaker's film to Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Bues).
The whole point of this is that it isn't the end of the story...
Another version of this film fetured as 'Spotlight' at Eternity Church Guildford for January 20, 2008
Often credited to Blind Willie Johnson, the song, "Nobody's Fault But Mine" exists in many versions. The 2007 recording by Beth Rowley is lyrically closer to Nina Simone's reading of the song than most of the others. I suspect the song dates back much earlier than the 1920's - probably at least to the mid 19th Century. Early acapella field recordings have the cadence of a slave work song with simple repetitive verses: "I've got a song I can sing", "I've got a Bible I can read". Johnson's lyrics sound like the words to a mis-heard or mis-remembered song. They, frankly, do not quite make sense, but the song becomes something else in the hands of a guitar-playing genius.
Other recordings of the song include:
Clara Smith (1925)
Blind Willie Johnson (1927)
Jerry Garcia & Grateful Dead (1966)
John Renbourn (1967)
Nina Simone (1968)
Led Zeppelin (1976)
Page & Plant (1994)
Beth Rowley (2007)
There are many renditions of the song on YouTube. One of the best is by 'Pops' Staples (father of Mavis Staples) -
