One of the things that upsets me is the fact that many people choose to judge Pre just on this race. Sure, he missed medaling by one place. But the thing that people don't take into consideration is the fact that he was 21 when he ran here. He was not even close to his true potential as a runner. If he would have just made it to 1976, I'm sure he would have done much better, in fact he would have medaled.

Then people would not be criticizing him as they do now about his 4th place finish.

    GO PRE!

Do you think Bowerman was smart to have Prefontaine focus on the 3 mile instead of the mile?

Stewart's kick was incredible. How far back did he come from? He finished the race like a 400m runner.

No doubt Pre would have taken the gold in 76. He had the ability to win this race, unfortunately the first 3 minutes were poorly ran. If Pre would have done what he is known for and made the pace this race would have ended differently.

One foot pre would have won if he didn't take off

Viren and Stewart were great! Pre, though another great runner, no doubt, didn't have a chance...gutsy how he tried though, the best effort....

Pre and Ian Stewart ran poor tactile races. Ian stewart had so much left at the end. Pre looks like he lost concentration on the 3rd turn and let Gammoudi and Viren pass him. He never let's anyone pass him in that situation, ever. But here, maybe he met his match that day. Viren was the best that day for sure.

I sincerely do not think so. Perhaps a few years later, but not in 1972.
